How To Apply Hot Oil Treatments
Start by heating your oil before applying to your hair and scalp. Place your oil in an applicator bottle or in a bowl that is safe for heating.
Next, put your oil in either hot water if you are using an applicator bottle, or the microwave if you are using a bowl.
Let the oil cool off before applying to your hair and scalp to prevent burning yourself.
Apply to the hair and scalp, place a shower cap over your head for about 15-20 minutes and rinse.
Bonus: You can also sit under a hooded dryer or steamer.
Why? Heat or steam will allow your hair cuticles to open up and help the oil penetrate your hair shaft which helps with moisture.
Complete this process by rinsing apply your leave-in conditioner and you ready to go.
Hold on, but when is the right time to apply a hot oil treatment?
When to Apply Your Hot Oil Treatment
It is best to apply your hot oil treatment after you have washed your hair.
You don’t want to apply it to dirty hair because your hair will not benefit best. You want to obtain full penetration of the oil onto your scalp and hair, and with dirty hair, the oil will just sit on top of your hair.
Applying your hot oil treatment right after you shampoo and before your deep condition is the best time to apply.

You need to listen to what your hair says but once a week is ideal.
Your hair might not require it that much and maybe once or twice a month is more than adequate. Personally, I do hot oil treatments only once a month.
Great Tips for Hot Oil Treatment for Natural Hair
- Apply enough that your whole head and scalp is drenched in oil but not so much that it drips down your neck.
- Feel free to mix and match the oils. Since they are all natural, there won’t be any adverse effects. If you don’t fancy the result, you can wash it out with a mild shampoo like Castile Soap and start again.
- You can perform hot oil treatments once a week or once a month. It all depends on your hair needs and what other products you have in your stash.
- You can use your hot oil treatment as a pre-poo mixed with a suitable conditioner.
- You can keep the hot oil treatment in your hair overnight once it cools down. You may end up with a greasy pillowcase the next morning though.
