Now that we've got that out of the way, let's continue!

To begin, let me state that I am a proud curly girl. Yes, it took me a long time to find out how to work with curls (the key: let it do what it wants, baby), but I have to admit that I enjoy a nice blowout as well. Judith Newman’s “Straight Story” in *Allure’s February issue (on sale now)* piqued my interest. Newman, who is also curly, decided to try keratin straightening, which I am not inclined to do, but I understand why she did. If you decide to go that way as well, there are some basic after-care considerations to keep in mind. I talked to hairstylists to learn how to take care of your newly curly curls.

Will I still need my flatiron and blowdryer? It depends on the look you want to achieve. Hairstylist Robert Vasquez of the Garren Salon in New York City says, “What most ladies appreciate about getting a Brazilian blowout is that they can get away with a good natural look.” However, if you want your hair to be extra straight and sleek, you may need to use your heat-styling tools, albeit this will take considerably less time.

Is it possible for me to dye my hair? You can, but only after you’ve had your straightening procedure.

“The therapy begins with a clarifying shampoo,” Vasquez explains. “If you’ve just had color applied, the shampoo can remove it.” Clients are advised to wait four to five days between coloring and straightening in order for the color to fully process.

What are the various chemical hair straightening procedures available?

Your options range from Cysteine treatments through Keratin and Olaplex procedures to rebonding, in order of permanency. By dissolving the natural bonds in frizzy hair and replacing them with bonds in the correct structure, the latter will give you forcefully straight hair.

Dr Harshna Bijlani explains, “The harsh chemicals employed in these treatments penetrate your hair and dissolve the connections, causing changes in the shape and texture of your hair.” “While this is exactly what you want from a straightening treatment, it also causes harm to your hair. All straightening solutions are not created equal, contrary to popular opinion. Ideally, you should meet with a hair professional to assess your hair’s porosity, texture, density, curl pattern in various locations, and overall health, and then work with him or her to choose the best treatment for you.”

The items you can use after straightening your hair
“Any shampoo containing sulfates is a no-no since it is incredibly abrasive on the scalp,” Rod Anker adds. “To avoid future deterioration of your hair’s health, switch to sulfate-free hair products.”

“You might also try shampooing less frequently, once every two to three days. You can, however, condition more frequently if necessary. Dr. Bijlani recommends going to a hair spa once every two weeks to save your hair from sun and pollution damage.

Is it true that straightened hair is harmed by the environment?

“All hair, especially straightened hair, is harmed by the environment,” explains Dr. Bijlani. “You’ve robbed your hair of its natural oils and exposed it to chemicals. This makes your hair more susceptible to environmental factors such as the sun, changing weather, and pollution. This is why, after deciding on a permanent straightening procedure, it’s critical to follow a thorough haircare regimen to avoid hair fall.”

If I have straightened hair, what should my at-home haircare routine look like?

Stick to your regular haircare routine: wash every two to three days, condition every two to three days, or more if necessary. Because straightened hair is drier and brittle, deep conditioning should be done once a week or every 10 days. Use an excellent quality leave-in hair serum after you shampoo your hair to keep it moisturized after straightening it. Before you go in for your straightening session, start putting hair vitamins into your diet to help strengthen your hair and prevent hair loss and thinning. Apart from that, to strengthen your tresses, eat a nutritious diet rich in antioxidants and good fats,” says the dermatologist.

“Because chemical hair straightening is a severe procedure, you must take particular precautions,” Anker adds. You can’t treat it whatever you want and expect it to remain soft. “Avoid using heated styling implements.” “If you absolutely must use a blow-dryer, use the cold setting to avoid harming your hair with heat,” Bijlani says. Avoid swimming or going on a trip that will expose your hair to the sun for long periods of time right after the treatment.”

How long does it take to straighten your hair?

“Keep a close watch on your hair’s condition and get a haircut every six to eight weeks. This will assist in removing any split ends or damaged edges. Alternatively, you may discover that receiving a Keratin treatment is a better long-term alternative for your hair’s health. While it only relaxes the hair and does not make it poker straight, it does not grow out and leave curly roots or flyaways like the others,” Anker explains.

“If you’re getting a hair color job, make sure you have your straightening treatment first, because most processes begin with a clarifying shampoo, which could wash out your color,” advises Dr. Bijlani.

What factors should I consider while deciding between temporary and permanent hair straightening?

Make an impartial decision about which treatment will provide you the best outcomes based on your lifestyle choices. “Chemically straightening your hair will keep your tresses manageable for longer. You won’t have to waste time or money on daily hair treatments that use heat and cause harm to your hair. On the other hand, it disrupts your hair’s links, which can have long-term consequences by leaving your hair coarse and brittle. Dr. Bijlani notes that the harsh chemicals utilized might cause to hair loss and thinning.

“Temporary hair straightening treatments are really gentler on your strands and do not disrupt your hair’s natural connections. They may not hold up against severely frizzy or curly hair, and regular upkeep and maintenance may be required, which may cost money and time,” she says.
